Understanding the difference between goals & intentions

Setting goals and intentions are both important for personal growth and achievement, but they are distinct concepts that differ in their approach and mindset.

Goals are specific, measurable targets that we strive to achieve within a certain timeframe. They are often outcome-oriented and focus on the end result, providing us with a clear sense of direction and accomplishment. For example, a goal could be to increase sales by 20% within the next quarter or to run a marathon within 6 months.

On the other hand, intentions are the underlying purpose and mindset behind our actions. While goals offer concrete targets to work towards, intentions reflect our values and motivations, nurturing a holistic approach to achieving our desired outcomes. They are rooted in the present moment and emphasise the journey rather than the destination, encouraging mindfulness and self-awareness. Intentions guide our behaviors, attitudes, and choices, shaping the way we pursue our goals and influencing our personal growth. An intention might be to approach challenges with resilience, to cultivate more compassion in relationships, or to prioritise self-care and balance in daily life.

Setting both goals and intentions can be an incredibly effective approach for personal and professional growth. Goals provide a clear target to work towards, allowing for measurable progress and a sense of achievement upon completion. On the other hand, intentions establish the mindset and direction for our actions, guiding our daily behaviours and decisions.

Goals provide the "what" and the "when," while intentions offer the "how" and the "why," ensuring that our actions are purposeful and aligned with our deeper values. This combined approach can lead to a more meaningful and fulfilling journey towards success.

So you could have the intention of resilience whilst training for the marathon. And on a day that you’re feeling tired, you could set the intention of being compassionate with yourself as you set out for your run.

Remember to move towards your goal with intention, be flexible and notice the difference it brings.
